Magnolia is a city located in Pike County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,071. It is the county seat of Pike County.
Magnolia Geography:
Magnolia is located at 31°8'57" North, 90°27'41" West (31.149272, -90.461332).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.5 km2 (3.3 mi2). 8.4 km2 (3.2 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.52% water.
Magnolia Demographics:
As of the census of 2000, there are 2,071 people, 749 households, and 515 families residing in the city. The population density is 246.8/km2 (639.5/mi2). There are 898 housing units at an average density of 107.0/km2 (277.3/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 44.42% White, 53.84% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 749 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% are married couples living together, 24.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 12.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $21,190, and the median income for a family is $25,069. Males have a median income of $21,991 versus $18,839 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,426. 22.5% of the population and 18.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.1% of those under the age of 18 and 23.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
