How Your DNA Influences Sleep, Stress, and Energy
A good night’s sleep, a stressful day, or an afternoon energy slump can affect people very differently. MyHeritage DNA 360° reveals inherited tendencies that may help explain your natural sleep patterns, stress response, mood, and energy levels.
What your DNA results can help you do
Your genes can influence everything from how well you sleep to how your body responds to stress. Your results can help you understand some of the factors that shape how you feel and function each day.
Understand your sleep
Explore genetic factors associated with sleep quality and duration, your natural sleep schedule, and tendencies such as daytime sleepiness or difficulty falling asleep.
Learn how you respond to stress
Find out how your genes may influence your response to stress, including cortisol regulation and other biological processes that help your body adapt.
Explore factors that affect how you feel
Gain insight into genetic tendencies related to mood, mental well-being, and the sleep and stress patterns that can influence how rested and energized you feel.

BTBD9 (Restless Legs)
Studies identified BTBD9 as a crucial gene influencing limb movements during sleep and iron metabolism.
CLOCK (Sleep & Weight)
The rs1801260 polymorphism is the most studied SNP in the CLOCK gene.
Deep Sleep (ADA)
Deep sleep is one of the stages of non-REM sleep. It is also called slow-wave sleep or delta-wave sleep because the brain emits slow (delta) waves during this stage.
HPA Axis Dysregulation
Several genetic variants are associated with HPA axis dysfunction. This can cause excessive cortisol production or activity, leading to anxiety, depression, fatigue, and inflammation.
Melatonin
Low melatonin is a common issue. It may disrupt sleep and cause tiredness.
Napping
A habitual short sleep is generally restorative, yet frequent need or lack of benefit from naps may hint at genetic influences.
NPAS2 (Mood/Sleep Schedule)
NPAS2 helps determine when we sleep and when we eat.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a disorder that interrupts your breathing while you sleep. A person with sleep apnea might wake up dozens of times to restore normal breathing, leading to daytime sleepiness.
Sleep Latency
The time it takes to fall asleep, indicating sleep quality and potential disorders. Varies greatly among individuals, can lead to sleep deprivation.
Sleep Quality
The quality of your sleep can have a big impact on how much energy you have during the day. Many genetic variants influence sleep.
Stress
A widespread response to perceived threats or demands, leading to mental and physical symptoms, potentially causing health issues.
Caffeine-Related Sleep Problems
Caffeine is a well-known stimulant. It can promote wakefulness and interrupt sleep by reducing the activity of adenosine, a sleep-promoting compound that builds up while we are awake and decreases while we sleep.
Daytime Sleepiness
Daytime sleepiness is the feeling of excessive sleepiness during the day. People with excessive daytime sleepiness often complain of not feeling well-rested, having difficulty waking up, or accidentally falling asleep during the day, among others.
GRIA3 (Sleep/Mood)
The minor 'A' allele of the rs687577 polymorphism has been associated with a decreased risk of depression in women and with longer sleep duration. Given the role of glutamate as an excitatory neurotransmitter, this variant may reduce GRIA3 activity by either decreasing the number of active receptors or attenuating the excitatory effects upon glutamate binding.
Insomnia
People with insomnia have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. Insomnia is the most common sleep condition in the US.
MTNR1A (Melatonin)
The most well-researched MTNR1A allele is rs2119882. Its 'C' allele may prevent the binding of proteins that activate gene expression, resulting in a lower number of MT1 receptors.
Night Peeing
Frequent need to urinate during the night, also known as nocturia. It can disrupt sleep and may indicate underlying health issues like bladder problems or diabetes.
Restless Legs
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. It is relatively common - around 1 in 10 people have it.
Sleep Duration
Analyzes a bio-marker reflecting your sleep habits, essential for overall health. Varied among individuals, can lead to cognitive and health issues.
Sleep Movement
A condition involving involuntary movements during sleep, relatively common, potentially affecting sleep quality.
Snoring
Snoring is a common issue of disrupted breathing during sleep due to restricted airways. A variety of factors can influence susceptibility to snoring, including your genetics.
