Interred Here, Dec. 4, 1826] [Agb Notes This Is In The Oliver Hazard Perry Plot, Fenced In With A Huge Spire, Erected By The State Of Rhode Island] Died: Port-Spain, Trinidad; ; Commodore Olivier Hazard Perry (1785-1819) Has His Final Resting Place Here After Being Moved Several Times. He Died Of Yellow Fever In Trinidad In 1819 On His 34th Birthday And Was Promptly Buried There. Following An Act Of Congress, Commodore Oliver H. Perry’s Remains Were Exhumed And Sailed To Newport In 1826 And His Remains Were Interred In The Common Burying Ground, Next To His Father. In 1843, The Property Line Dividing Common Burying Ground And The Island Cemetery Was Moved To Be Able To Include Perry And His Father In The Island Cemetery, Marked With A Granite And Marble Obelisk That The State Of Ri Finally Completed.; ; Commodore Matthew C. Perry, Brother Of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, War Of 1812 Hero, Also Had Interment Issues. As A Resident Of New York City, His Remains Were Buried In His Wife’s Family Vault In St. Mark’s In-The-Bouwerie Church In Lower Manhattan. In 1866, At The Request Of His Daughter Caroline And Her Husband August Belmont, Perry’s Remains Were Moved To His Native Newport And Buried At Island Cemetery In What Is Now Known As Belmont Circle. Belmont, One Of The Earliest Summer Residents Of Newport To Host Lavish Parties And Court New York Society Is Reported To Be The Person Who Introduced The 10-Course Dinner To Newport Hostesses., The Whereabouts Of Perry Remained An Issue For New Yorkers Who Claimed He Was Buried There Until 1953 When The Mayors Of New York And Newport Produced The Original Transfer Certificate As Well As Having The Family Vault In N.y. Opened To Prove The Body Had Indeed Been Moved To Newport. |
